U.Va. CHARGE Initiatives

Initiative 5: U.Va. CHARGE Enhancement Funds

Provide small grants to support women’s career advancement in the STEM and SBE disciplines. Career advancement activities include: research, teaching, scholarship, and professional development.

Grants can be used:

  • For research needs
  • To create new curricula or other teaching advancement
  • To foster interdisciplinary collaborations
  • To bridge resources between grants
  • To prepare portfolios for tenure or promotion
  • To extend networks by travel to international conferences or to visit collaborators

Enhancement funds are meant to support women faculty in STEM and SBE career advancement.  Enhancement Funds, up to $5,000 max, will be awarded for activities to support the applicant’s research, teaching, scholarship, and/or professional development. Faculty from underrepresented groups and mid-career faculty are strongly encouraged to apply.  A more complete description of the program is described in the Enhancement Fund Program - Guidelines and Description.

Funds are awarded twice per year by the U.Va. CHARGE program (NSF ADVANCE IT Award #1209197). The deadlines are:

  • Fall: Applications for the Fall Semester are due: Friday before Thanksgiving break (November 21 in 2014)

  • Spring: Applications for the Spring Semester are due: Friday before Spring break (March 6 in 2014)

NSF funds will be used to support tenured/tenure track faculty, part of NSF ADVANCE program goals. Generous support from the Provost’s office aimed at enhancing career development opportunities for all faculty will be used to support tenure ineligible faculty.

Still have questions? See the FAQs or call Kelly Feltault, CHARGE Program Manager at 434-982-3382 or email at feltault@virginia.edu.  We look forward to awarding these funds to faculty women as we strive toward our goals in U.Va. CHARGE and strengthening the University of Virginia.

The goal of the NSF ADVANCE Program is to increase the participation of women, including African Americans, Latina, and Asian American women, in the academic science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and social, behavioral and economic (SBE) science careers.
